A Stroke of Luck: Maddi Niebanck’s Journey from Survival to Advocacy

Maddi Niebanck's life took an unexpected turn just 10 days after her college graduation in May 2017. At 22, she faced a life-altering event that would reshape her future in ways she never imagined.

Since childhood, Maddi had suffered from debilitating migraines. Following one particularly gruesome migraine lasting 24 days, an MRI revealed a rare arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the right occipital lobe of her brain. Determined to eliminate the risk of a potential rupture, Maddi decided to undergo brain surgery after completing her studies at Georgetown University.

However, fate had different plans. A pre-operative procedure following her college graduation led to a blood clot, resulting in a massive brain hemorrhage. Maddi's parents were told by the neurosurgeon before rushing into the OR that the situation was grim and he wasn’t sure she was going to make it. Seven hours and six liters of blood transfusions later, Maddi woke up from a coma, completely paralyzed on the left side of her body.

In the face of this overwhelming challenge, Maddi's resilience shone through. She embraced the philosophy that "obstacles are opportunities," transforming her setback into a platform for growth and advocacy. Her Instagram handle, @maddistrokeofluck, embodies this positive outlook, blending the harsh reality of stroke with a sense of gratitude for life. Seven years post-stroke, Maddi's life has changed dramatically – for the better. She's now a full-time professional, author of two books (including one about her recovery journey), travels the world, and lives independently. Her passion for disability advocacy has led her to become a content creator and host of in-person stroke community events, Fast Fwd Summits.

Maddi's advocacy work extends beyond social media. She represents CIONIC, a company at the forefront of neurological mobility solutions, as the Community Engagement and Advocacy Manager. Through this partnership, Maddi helps raise awareness about the innovative technology that can and has improved the lives of stroke survivors and others with mobility challenges.

Her advocacy work focuses on empowering young stroke survivors and promoting better understanding and support within the medical community and society at large. Maddi organizes workshops, speaks at conferences, and collaborates with healthcare providers to improve patient care and rehabilitation strategies for young stroke survivors.

Maddi's journey exemplifies the power of a positive mindset in recovery. She emphasizes that recovery is not just about physical rehabilitation, but also about the attitude one adopts. Her concept of a "fully recovered mindset" encourages survivors to find new ways to accomplish tasks, rather than to dwell on limitations.

Through her books, social media presence, community events, and public speaking engagements, Maddi shares valuable insights and strategies for coping with the challenges of stroke recovery. She addresses topics such as overcoming fatigue, managing anxiety, and rediscovering one's identity post-stroke. Maddi's story is a testament to the human spirit's resilience. From the depths of near-death experience and paralysis, she has risen to become a beacon of hope for the stroke community. Her message is clear: while we can't always control what happens to us, we can control how we respond.

As Maddi continues to advocate, inspire, and push the boundaries of her own recovery, she reminds us all that every obstacle can indeed be an opportunity. Her journey from downtrodden, hemiplegic stroke survivor to thriving advocate and entrepreneur serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination, support, and a positive mindset, one can not only recover but flourish after a life-altering event.

Maddi Niebanck's story is not just about survival; it's about redefining what's possible and using personal challenges as a springboard to help others. Her work continues to touch lives, offering hope and practical support to stroke survivors and their families around the world.
