Claim Your Day: Bob Anderson’s Innovative Path to Stroke Recovery

Bob Anderson's stroke recovery journey is a testament to the power of determination, innovation, and self-motivation. On October 8, 2021, Bob suffered a brainstem stroke that affected his entire right side and left him with slurred speech.

Despite the initial fear and uncertainty, Bob's story is one of remarkable resilience and ingenuity.

Home-Based Recovery

Unable to afford traditional physical therapy, Bob took his recovery into his own hands. He transformed his home into a rehabilitation center, dedicating hours each day to his self-designed therapy regimen.

This approach allowed him to make significant progress without the need for formal physical therapy sessions.

Innovative Therapy Techniques

Bob's recovery was marked by constant innovation. He creatively repurposed common household objects for his therapy exercises. This resourcefulness not only saved money but also allowed him to tailor his rehabilitation to his specific needs and environment.

Functional Therapy Approach

A key aspect of Bob's recovery was his focus on functional therapy. Rather than isolated exercises, he incorporated therapeutic movements into everyday tasks. This approach helped him regain practical skills and improved his overall quality of life.

Project Therapy

One of Bob's most inspiring strategies is what he calls "project therapy." He engages in various household projects as part of his rehabilitation, including:

  • Carpentry

  • Electrical wiring

  • Plumbing

  • Landscaping

  • Yard work

These activities not only provided physical therapy but also gave Bob a sense of accomplishment and purpose during his recovery.

Dedication and Persistence

Bob's commitment to his recovery was unwavering. He dedicated hours every day to his home-based therapy, consistently pushing himself to improve.

His "Bob's 20 list" of reflections and goals demonstrates his structured approach to recovery.

Mindset and Motivation

Bob emphasized the importance of mindset in his recovery. He drew inspiration from various sources, including videos from other stroke survivors. He constantly challenged himself, setting both short-term and long-term goals to keep himself motivated.

Remarkable Progress

Within just seven weeks of his stroke, Bob had made incredible strides. He regained movement in his fingers, improved his hand function, and even started walking. His progress from being unable to move to taking steps and planning road trips is truly inspiring.

Bob's story serves as a powerful reminder that with the right attitude, creativity, and dedication, stroke recovery is possible even without traditional therapy resources. His journey exemplifies the potential of home-based rehabilitation and the importance of adapting recovery techniques to individual circumstances.

Bob's recovery was significantly impacted by an experienced stroke nurse who told him he had 10-minutes to have a pity party while she took care of another patient and then there would be no more of that.  When she returned, she told him to never say "I can't" and to replace it with "not yet." Every time she left his hospital room she would say two things, “Your day is filled with possibilities” and “Claim your day!” Bob did as he was instructed and this approach helped shift his mindset towards a more positive and growth-oriented perspective, encouraging him to focus on future possibilities rather than current limitations.

Bob found the Stroke Buddies YouTube channel and support groups incredibly helpful in his recovery journey. He encourages other stroke survivors to explore YouTube for valuable resources and to get involved in peer support groups. These platforms provided Bob with inspiration, practical advice, and a sense of community, which were crucial in motivating him to pursue his recovery goals and learn from others' experiences.
