Brent Calhoun's journey from stroke survivor to "thivor" is a testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit. In 2010, at the age of 50, Brent's life took an unexpected turn when he experienced two strokes just two days apart. As a successful veterinarian and hospital administrator, Brent went from leading a normal, active life to being bedridden and unable to speak in a matter of days.
The first stroke affected Brent's speech center, while the second impacted his right-side mobility. Initially, he didn't realize he had suffered a stroke, mistaking the symptoms for a migraine. It wasn't until he found himself unable to communicate with his wife over the phone that the severity of his condition became apparent.
Brent's recovery journey was challenging and eye-opening. He spent six weeks in the hospital, followed by three weeks in a rehabilitation facility. During this time, he underwent intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Determined to return to his job, Brent pushed himself hard, focusing primarily on physical recovery.
However, Brent soon realized that stroke recovery encompasses much more than just the physical dimension. He grappled with emotional challenges, including a condition called emotionalism, which caused him to experience uncontrolled bouts of laughter, crying, or anger. This emotional rollercoaster affected not only Brent but also his family, particularly his sons.
For nearly 11 years after his stroke, Brent felt lost, unsure of his purpose in life. It wasn't until 2021 that he had a revelation – he could use his experience to help other stroke survivors. This realization marked the beginning of Brent's transformation from a survivor to a "thivor."
Today, Brent dedicates himself to coaching fellow stroke survivors, helping them navigate the complex journey of recovery. He offers a comprehensive approach, addressing not just the physical aspects but also the emotional and psychological challenges that come with stroke recovery. Brent's mission is to provide a complete roadmap for rebuilding life after a stroke, helping survivors find confidence and joy in their recovery process. To that end he has written a book. Stroke Survivor’s First Aid Kit combines his personal experience with medical expertise, it provides insights into mindset, physical recovery, and emotional well-being. It’s designed to support both stroke survivors and their caregivers on the path to healing. Go to the link - tinyurl.com/SSFAK-Book - to learn more.
