Thomas G. Broussard, Jr., Ph.D., is a remarkable three-time stroke survivor who has dedicated his life to raising awareness about aphasia. His journey began one evening while walking with his wife near their home in Boston. Suddenly, Tom found himself crawling towards a pole, unable to comprehend what was happening. His wife, recognizing the signs of a stroke, heroically dragged him 310 feet to a nearby CVS pharmacy.
Tom's stroke left him with aphasia, a language disorder that affects communication. Despite the challenges, he woke up in the hospital two days later, initially confused about his surroundings. As he began to understand his condition, Tom's determination to recover and help others grew stronger.
Before his stroke, Tom was an associate dean at The Heller School at Brandeis University. His background as a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, naval officer, shipbuilder, and business owner in career development and training provided him with a unique perspective on overcoming obstacles.
Driven by his experience, Tom founded Stroke Educator, Inc. and a non-profit organization called Aphasia Nation, Inc. These initiatives are part of his national "Aphasia Awareness" campaign, aimed at educating the public about this life-changing language disorder that affects millions but remains largely unknown.
Tom's efforts to bring more resources to aphasia survivors are truly inspiring. He has written five books about aphasia, sharing his insights and experiences to help others navigate their recovery journey. His work extends beyond writing, as he has become a sought-after public speaker, delivering over 800 presentations across 41 states.
Tom's speaking engagements at hospitals have reached more than 20,000 people with aphasia, as well as their families, caregivers, clinicians, and students. His talks provide valuable information, hope, and support to those affected by aphasia. Through his work with hospitals, Tom strives to improve the care and resources available to aphasia survivors, advocating for better understanding and treatment of the condition.
As the "Johnny Appleseed of Aphasia Awareness," Tom Broussard continues to sow seeds of knowledge and hope across the country. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the human spirit. By sharing his experiences and dedicating his life to helping others, Tom has become a beacon of light for the aphasia community, inspiring survivors and their loved ones to persevere and thrive despite the challenges they face.
