The Neuro Mermaid: How Tawnie Romero-Golic Turned a Near-Fatal Stroke Into a Movement

Tawnie Romero-Golic's journey as a stroke survivor is a testament to resilience and advocacy. At just 28 years old, this special education teacher experienced a life-altering event that would reshape her future and inspire others. On May 5th, Tawnie's world changed dramatically when she felt a sudden, intense pain in her head while showering. Despite the severity of her symptoms, including difficulty speaking and extreme sensitivity to light, Tawnie was initially misdiagnosed at the emergency room. For a week, she endured excruciating pain, unaware that she was experiencing a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

It wasn't until her left eye crossed inward that Tawnie finally received proper medical attention. At the hospital, she was quickly diagnosed with a brain bleed and life-flighted to the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors were amazed to discover that Tawnie had been bleeding for an entire week, yet she remained lucid and able to communicate.

Tawnie's recovery journey highlighted the challenges of invisible deficits. While she didn't lose her ability to walk or talk, she faced difficulties with numbers and occasional memory lapses. She also has issues with depression, anxiety, cognitive abilities, balance, vertigo, facial numbness, and migraines. This experience fueled her passion for raising awareness about hidden struggles that stroke survivors often face.

Determined to make a difference, Tawnie became a vocal advocate for young stroke survivors and those with invisible deficits. She recognized the importance of early diagnosis and proper medical care, especially for younger individuals who might be overlooked or misdiagnosed, as she was.

Tawnie adopted the moniker "Neuro Mermaid," symbolizing her neurological challenges and her newfound passion for mermaiding. She even created a unique mermaid tail featuring her own brain scan, a powerful visual representation of her journey. Embracing her new role as an advocate, she became an awareness ambassador for The Aneurysm and AVM Foundation (TAFF). She teamed up with them, so her advocacy can have more impact and purpose, and for the support of an entire organization and fellow survivors.

To reach and support fellow stroke survivors, Tawnie launched podcasting and live Instagram initiatives. These platforms allow her to share her story, offer encouragement, and provide valuable information to others navigating similar challenges. Her efforts have created a supportive community for stroke survivors, particularly those dealing with invisible deficits.

Tawnie's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare. Her experience underscores the need for thorough medical examinations, especially when patients report severe symptoms. Through her advocacy work, Tawnie continues to inspire and educate, turning her harrowing experience into a beacon of hope for stroke survivors worldwide.
